Dethroning Anxiety: Arizona’s Gift

I know that this trip did not remove my anxiety. It is a trait that will continue to follow me for the rest of my life. I have not transformed into an adrenaline junkie, nor will I be an Airbnb renter in the near future. However, this trip allowed me to tackle my anxiety head on. Instead of allowing my anxiety to dictate my actions and force me to remain as an observer, I challenged it.

I hate the middle seat-

It means no arm

rest – is not an option.

Alone at first, but then you came.

We made sure to never touch –

afraid that a single brush would transfer

every hidden tale we carried on board.

You faced right, I left

enough space between us.

Yet we mirrored each other –

waiting for one to act first

so that the other could follow.

We bonded.

Formed an alliance.

No words spoken.

We watched the same movie.

A complex, deeply coded conversation

among two strangers

whose eyes never touched.
